Compared to other ocean energy technologies, the Jellyfish can be built to 20MW per unit.
Large hurricanes is now a fact of life. Hurricane Sandy affected the barrier islands of Long Island and New Jersey. A lot of sand has been lost and must be reclaimed. The old way is to dump sand over existing sand and is controversial. It's expensive ($110M for Long Island last year) and has to be done again every few years.
Brimes is working towards a sustainable solution. Although we still need to do more experiments, data shows that large waves cause erosion, and our machines reduce wave height. This reduction is wave height can help rebuild damaged coasts.
Our machine reduces wave height by absorbing excess wave energy and turns that energy into electricity. Depending on the site, electricity production can offset the cost of reclamation and can be a sustainable solution to our coastal erosion problem.
After two years of development and several prototypes, we developed the Jellyfish Technology. The simple design translates to low investment cost for the end user. Full understanding of how wave energy travels in the water has led to high-efficiency numbers. The result is our units will have higher KW output and smaller footprint than any previous designs.

Purely mechanical Desalination!
We have succeeded in desalinating salt water to fresh water. Please note is this is not seawater yet, but water + salt solution at a controlled TDS level (Total Dissolved Solids). As the device grows bigger, we should have enough power to desalinate seawater.
This was done using the same prototype but we removed the electrical generator and replaced it with our water desalination module. This is not wave energy to electric to desalination but direct wave energy to desalination- no electricity input. This will remove loses during electrical conversion.
This technology could be useful for small to medium-sized islands, even private islands that need fresh water and electricity all in one device.
Other applications are beach/ coastal areas like California, Hawaii even the Bahamas.

High absorption efficiency!
Initial test results show a remarkable 55% absorption efficiency. Electrical efficiency is still low because of high mechanical losses.This is expected because of the roughness of the 3D printed transmission system. Electrical yield should go up as we use better components. Everything is still bootstrapped. Thanks to Stony Brook University for providing us with Ph.D. mechanical engineering students to do the test.
